Picturing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a week-long event that took place this year from Sept. 17-21 at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver and other locations throughout the Lower Mainland. The purpose of the event is manifold: In the name of healing and reconciliation, former residential school students were encouraged to share their stories, whether privately or publicly, as the TRC commissioners recorded their experiences. The public was invited for the  week to be part of the discussion and to bear witness to the hearings.

Churches, including the United Church, were also present to acknowledge their role in the residential school era. At the end of each day, Honorary Witnesses were called up to give expressions of reconciliation. The photographs above were taken on the event.
