History was made on Oct. 11 in Baranquilla Colombia, as Colombia’s national soccer team beat Chile and made it into the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
Colombia overcame a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 against a Chilean side that played with only 10 men after the 66th minute of the game.
It is an extraordinary result for the Colombian side as it seemed defeated in the opening half. Chile raced to a 3-0 lead on goals by Juventus star Arturo Vidal, in the 19th minute, and Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez, with two goals in the 22nd and 29th minute.
Mid-way through the second half, Chilean Carlos Carmona was sent off at the result of two book-able offences. This was a reasonable decision made by the referee, and was essential in Colombia’s comeback. Colombian Teofilo Gutierrez scored in the 69th minute to start the turn-around for the Colombians.
Although the entire Colombian team seemed more awake in the second half, the hero of the match for was Monaco striker Radamel Falcao. His tenacity showed as he converted two late penalties, in the 75th and 84th minute, which brought the draw and qualification for his country.
Although the win for Chile would have seen them guarantee their ninth World Cup appearance, Chileans remain hopeful for qualification after other qualifying games results worked in their favor.
With one more round of games in regional qualifying left to play, the draw against Colombia has left Chile in fourth place; the top four automatically qualify for the World Cup and the fifth place team goes into a further playoff.
With Falcao leading the team, there is no doubt that there will be more historic moments to come for Colombia next summer in Brazil.
