People go on vacation for different reasons, some would say to see the world or to gain new experiences.

There is, however, a more important reason to going on vacation that people generally tend to forget about: it’s good for your health.

Many studies have shown that in order for the human mind to work at its full capacity, it needs regular breaks from hard work. So why isn’t taking a vacation as much a priority as working eight hours a day, five times a week?

“It basically boils down to the fact that I can’t afford to travel anywhere,” says Jason Elder, when asked why he hasn’t gone on vacation recently.

Lack of funds is a problem for many people today. However, there are different ways to take advantage of your vacation time without buying a plane ticket.

“I might take some time off and just relax,” Elder said. “I’m not a big party person. I’d rather just relax or just grab some drinks with a couple friends.”

Taking the time to unwind, even if that is just going to a local bar like Elder plans, is necessary to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and is an economical alternative to taking expensive trips.

Avoiding stress is an added bonus to staying local on your vacation. Planning a destination, budget and booking flights, are all things that can be avoided. To some, however, these things are part of what makes going on vacation fun.

There are alternatives to this more thrifty solution if hitting up the bar down the street doesn’t strike your fancy. Going on vacation for a shorter period of time, or researching places that fit in your budget could be the best solution to satisfying that traveller’s itch.

If none of these options seem to work for you there is one last alternative: start saving. The reward of going on a nice trip takes time and a lot of hard work but is, without a doubt worth every penny.

Either way, taking the time to get away from your busy life helps in multiple aspects of your health. Not only does it give your brain and your body a break from stress but studies have shown that travelling strengthens relationships, creates memories, and even helps improve educational success.
