The tradition of lighting candles on Dec. 7 and 8 has been around for a long time in Colombia and other parts of Latin America, to celebrate the Immaculate Virgin of Christianity.
Candles are lit to thank God for all favours and blessings received. The candles signify truth and eternal life. In Vancouver, this tradition was celebrated at the Burnaby Hall on Dec. 8. Supported by the Colombian Consulate in Vancouver, hundreds of Colombians gathered to take part in a day full of music, food, and family entertainment that was followed by the children lighting candles and then blowing them after making a wish, to complete the night full of culture and tradition.
